Cardinal Tagle invites faithful to join Penitential Walk for Life
“Let us join Jesus who walked with us humbly, justly, and lovingly. Every step we take is a commitment to the value of life that Jesus offers to all, especially the poor and neglected.” This is the call of Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio G. Tagle in a circular addressed to all priests, religious communities and lay faithful of the Archdiocese of Manila as invites his flock to join the Way of the Cross called Penitential Walk for Life on April 14, 2017, Good Friday from 4:30 am to 9:00 am. The Way of the Cross will start its first station at the Plaza Rajah Sulayman in Malate Manila. The last station will be at the Minor Basilica of the Immaculate Conception (Manila Cathedral) in Intramuros. The Penitential Walk will pass through Roxas Boulevard. Cardinal Tagle also encouraged those who will join the Penitential Walk for Life to bring transistor radio to listen and follow the prayers and meditations aired over Radio Veritas. The Penitential Walk for Life is organized by Radio Veritas846, Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), Sangguniang Laiko, and the Archdiocese of Manila. In February 18, 2017, thousands of Catholic faithful took part in the “Walk for Life” an initiative of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines’ Episcopal Commission on the Laity through its lay arm, the Sangguniang Laiko ng Pilipinas at the Quirino Parade Grounds in Rizal Park, Manila. Walk for Life was intended to put forward the advocacy for the care, protection and defense of all human life from conception to natural death, as well as due process for law offenders, humane treatment of criminals and adequate rehabilitation for those involved in drugs. Radio Veritas in partnership with the Archdiocese of Manila and TV Maria first organized the Penitential Walk on April 18, 2014 and April 3, 2015. With themes “Via Crucis for Good Weather” in 2014 and “The Poor in the Experience of Calamities and for Peace” in 2015, both Good Friday Walks are meant for the country’s safety from future calamities. The 2016 Marian Exhibit
The EDSA Shrine – Shrine of Mary, Queen of Peace, Our Lady of EDSA, led by their Rector, Fr. Lari Abaco together with Fr. George Kochuchakkalakal, Rev. Arnel Calata, Jr. opened a special Marian Exhibit from 09 October 2016 to 15 November 2016 at the Serviam Hall, 2nd Floor of EDSA Shrine. The Marian Exhibit was opened daily to the public for viewing. Prayer Intentions that were deposited in the Petition Box at the exhibit was devoutly prayed over by the resident priests of EDSA Shrine, while rosaries were also freely given out to all those patrons who dropped by the Exhibit to encourage Marian devotion as the month of the holy rosary was celebrated.
The more than month-long exhibit displayed not only the images and statues of the Blessed Virgin Mary according to the various titles given to her, but also showcased the major scriptural events where the Blessed Virgin Mary’s role as the mother of our Savior, Jesus Christ, was highlighted.
The Marian exhibit showed various episodes in the life, ministry, death and resurrection of Jesus from the perspective of a mother’s heart – of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It aimed to recall certain principal events in the history of our salvation as reflected upon in the Blessed Virgin Mary’s journey with Jesus Chris, specifically in the incarnation (Joyful Mysteries), to Jesus’ public life of miracles and teachings (Luminous Mysteries), to the passion that culminates the revelation of God’s love (Sorrowful Mysteries) and the joy out of Jesus’ triumphs in the hope of the resurrection (Glorious Mystery).
The Marian Exhibit struck a chord with some patrons who were moved by the special effort done to clearly illustrate the life of Christ and the Blessed Virgin Mary, to quote: “I was touched by the Marian Exhibit as I felt I was really transported back to each decade of the mystery of the Holy Rosary, depicted by each statue of images. It gave me the chance to vividly see and reflect upon the absolute act of selflessness made by Jesus Christ. I could empathize with the Blessed Virgin Mary’s various sentiments over Jesus Christ’s love and sacrifice to save mankind. As an outsider looking into our Blessed Virgin Mary’s heart, I felt also her immense joy, agonizing pain and jubilant triumph for humanity’s deliverance, and the walk through the Marian Exhibit is a special spiritual encounter worth to remember.”

The 2016 Sayaw Kulay Festival
Last 29 October 2016, the EDSA Shrine – Shrine of Mary, Queen of Peace, Our Lady of EDSA, as pioneered by their Rector, Fr. Lari Abaco with the support of Fr. George Kochuchakkala and Rev. Arnel Calata, Jr. celebrated its first Sayaw Kulay Festival: A Dance Festival of Peace where a total of 13 liturgical dance groups coming from the areas of Rizal, Pasig, Manila, Quezon City, Taguig City, and Makati City participated by means of a “dance competition.” The liturgical dance groups who participated were: The Dreamers (Cainta, Rizal), Legion of Mary (Rosario, Pasig), MHTP Deaf Dancers (Sampaloc, Manila), Ismam & Kidz (Pandacan, Manila), Our Lady of Peace-HJM (EDSA Shrine), Zaion (Taguig City), DMI – INDAK TEJEROS (Makati City), Music Ministry (EDSA Shrine), PASE: Parents of Altar Servers (Pandacan, Manila), In the Name of God Dancers (EDSA Shrine), Makabata School Foundation, Inc. (Sta. Lucia, Pasig City), Lectors and Commentators Ministry (EDSA Shrine), Teatro Sacro Jesu (Sta. Mesa, Manila), and Danza del NiƱo Jesus (Pandacan, Manila).
All dance groups interpreted the officially arranged instrumental version of “Birhen ng EDSA” through their chosen dance medium of basic ballet, jazz, pop, folk and modern dance, that reflected a unique form of prayer in remembering, proclaiming and celebrating the 1986 peaceful EDSA People Power Revolution.
The Sayaw Kulay Festival culminated not only the commemoration of October as the month of the Holy Rosary but also deepened devotion to Mary, Queen of Peace, Our Lady of EDSA whose unfaltering intercession and loving protection over the Filipino people brought about the victorious peaceful EDSA People Power revolution that ended the dark era of Martial Law.
The nine colors of peace –orange, gold, turquoise, yellow, pink, green, red, lilac, and blue were highlighted in the dance festival as all dance groups that participated wore these colors to symbolize: the lighting of dawn for a new beginning (Orange), love destroying walls to unify (Gold), re-learning to trust in God (Turquoise), unwavering of faith for a dignified life (Yellow), persevering hope for the oppressed (Pink), coming about of justice, forgiveness and reconciliation (Green), renewal of the faith (Red), transformation to wholeness (Lilac), peace finding a home in the heart of every Peace-loving people (Blue).
It is our hope that the Sayaw Kulay Festival: A Dance Festival of Peace, becomes a tradition to remember that the 1986 EDSA Revolution has become God’s way to remind us of the gifts of Faith, Hope and Love, where our journey to democracy and peace be relived, which consequently gave birth to EDSA Shrine. The event was not only a night of performance but was an alternative expression of a communal prayer of adoration, praises, offering and thanksgiving to our Shrine of Mary, Queen of Peace, Our Lady of EDSA. The dance participants and shrine-goers alike who were present rekindled the spirit of EDSA. Now, it continues to live amongst us. With our intensified Marian devotion, we are not just mere advocates of peace but instruments and channels of peace.
